The Freehold Lunar Calendar

Calendar Rules:

  • A lunar month is defined as the 29 or 30 day period following the appearance of the first observable crescent after the new moon (usually 2-3 days after the "dark moon").
  • The date of Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, must occur at some point within the lunar month called Ere-Yule.
  • The year consists of two half-years, commencing with winter followed by summer.
  • The beginning of winter, in the month called Winterfull, is also the beginning of the new lunar year, and occurs two lunar months prior to the lunar month of Ere-Yule.
  • A lunar year consisist of 12 lunar months except when a thirteenth "leap-month" is required to ensure Winter Solstice still occurs in the month of Ere-Yule.
  • When required, the thirteenth month, called Litha, occurs during Midsummer following the month of Ere-Litha and preceeding the month of After-Litha.

  • A great 19-year cycle is formed (see the Metonic Cycle) with only a six hour error (with respect to the date of Winter Solstice) creeping in after 19 years. This 19 year cycle we are calling a "High-week", for lack of a better Germanic term.
  • However, after four great cycles, or 76 years, (4 x 19yrs = 76 yrs), the error accumulates to 24 hours and therefore one day must be substracted from the calendar every 76 years, over the week of Winter Solstice (see Callippic Cycle). This 76 year cycle we are calling a "High-month", for lack of a better Germanic term.

  • The count of the Freeyear is simply the accounting of the number of years since the year of founding of the Heathen Freehold Society, which is said to have formed in Freeyear One.
  • Below is the first of four 19-year High-weeks.
  • Dates given for the Full Moons are according to Pacific Standard Time.

References & Notes:

  • The Anglo-Saxon chronicler Bede provides a description of the lunar calandar of ancient Heathen.
  • Knowledge of the Metonic lunar cycle is attested by inscriptions on Bronze Age gold cone hats found in France, Germany and Switzerland.
  • There is some debate among modern Heathen exactly where in the observable phases of the moon the lunar month should rightly begin. We have opted for the appearance of the first cresecent.
